Bringing Along Baby

I attended my good friend Sarah’s wedding over the weekend, which was held in a beautiful location on the North Fork of Long Island. The guests were a mixture of friends from all of the different places she has lived as well as some work colleagues from the yoga studio she runs. It was a nice group of people, and I was happy to meet them all!

As the wedding got underway, I noticed an unusual sight for a wedding – a couple had brought along their newborn baby to the ceremony. Amazingly, little Noah was a model guest – hardly any fussing! I thought it was so nice that they made the trip with such a new member of their family in tow.

Many new parents I know don’t feel comfortable bringing their babies along to such “adult” events, and I can see that side too! Anyone have any good stories to tell about toting their kid along to a wedding or other event?

Bean Baby (canine version) Nelly Bean

ALL babies are irresistible! No matter the species, they naturally make us smile and want to love them. This one is particularly beautiful and soft and lovable..and has good taste in pillows too.

Crazy Celeb Baby Names

Babble has a funny article today about the "worst celebrity baby names". It's always fun to hear the unusual names people think up for their kids (remember the Seinfeld episode where George suggested the names "Soda" and "Seven"?) - and celebrities seem to be pros at it!

My favorites? Too many to name, but here's a few:
Jason Lee's son: Pilot Inspektor
Jermaine Jackson's son: "Jermajesty" (!!!)
Penn Jilette's (of Penn and Teller) daughter? Moxie Crimefighter.

I'm totally cracking up. Anyone have any friends who went this route? Do tell!

New Designer Alert - Atsuyo et Akiko

We just got in this new brand at Bean and we're in love!

Atsuyo et Akiko are a Brooklyn-based pair who manage to meld fashion-forward style with kid-appropriate cuteness. We always do well with NY-themed items, and theirs are a great new addition to our lineup. Je t'aime New York and Brooklyn tees and onesies are a great gift for city babies.

I also absolutely love their pickup truck hoodie - a great wear-it-anywhere staple that's practical and stylish.

Brooklyn Children's Museum Reopens

Urban Baby informs us that the Brooklyn Children's Museum reopens this weekend, "with new exhibitions and programs from a freshwater pond to an imaginative toddler gallery. Originally founded in 1899 as the world’s first museum just for kids, the daffodil building is now twice the size (plus it’s “green,” with details like geothermal heating and recycled flooring)."

Sounds like a great day trip!

Special events and performances will be going on all weekend, visit brooklynkids.org. for more info.

Bean Baby - Madelyn

It was hard to choose from all the pics of little Madelyn that parents Amy and Cam sent me (seriously, every single one is heart-meltingly cute), but I thought these were especially sweet.

Madelyn is having her 1-month birthday this week. How time flies!

Social Networking for Babies?

In the age of Facebook and Myspace, it seems like everyone has a some sort of social networking thing going on. I personally have gotten sort of into Facebook: I have my own page and Bean has a page too! It's a fun way to keep in touch with old friends, though anyone who has a page can vouch for the fact that you often end up with friends who you have nothing in common with besides a stint at the same grade school.

Speaking of grade schoolers, the NY Times Style Section had a story last week about a lesser-known form of social networking: Totspot. The site bills itself as a "Facebook for children", and it seems to be quite a popular destination for new parents. Tech-y moms and dads can log on and chronicle the lives of their kids, often from the kids' "perspectives".

This is a little strange to me - on one hand I could see how parents would want to keep friends and family updated; but it also seems that (as the Times points out), they are "shaping their children’s online identities even before they are diaper-free". What do you think?

Nanny Tattling

Time Out NY Kids mentioned this blog in their advice column this week, and I had to check it out. I Saw Your Nanny allows people to post anonymous comments about nannies who behave badly towards their charges or other caretakers.

Complaints range from ignoring children at the playground to drunken and abusive behavior. In a city where so many parents work and hire nannies to take care of their kids, I'm surprised something like this hasn't come along sooner. I've heard all kinds of stories from both sides.... emotionally abusive employers, ambivalent nannies, nanycams galore.

But what good does a site like this do? It's certainly a good way to let off steam in cases of minor infractions. But in the case of truly heinous behavior, I would hope that these tattlers would make a bit more effort to let the parents in on it.

It's Easy Being Green

Building on Gail's post on plastic bottles from the other day, Babble has an article on the 3 most common mistakes parents make when it comes to protecting our environment. Like many people today, I'm concerned about how my actions are affecting the planet we live on, and I think these simple points could be helpful to the new mommies and daddies among us.

The article claims that using plastic bottles is the #1 change that parents should make. Why? Because you eliminate worry about what those materials are going to do to the kid and the environment, and eliminate any chance of ill effects. They recommend glass or stainless bottles, and if all else fails, to buy plastic marked with #2, 3, or 4.

Other points? Don't renovate while your baby is in utero or a newborn - chemicals that adults have built up certain immunities to don't affect babies the same way. And, though it seems obvious, buy green (food, household products, etc) whenever possible. Read the full article here.

what about those plastic baby bottles?

This morning's editorial in the New York Times (see below) may or may not help to sort out your plastic bottle questions. Please comment on this issue!

That Plastic Baby Bottle Published: September 6, 2008

What do you do when one arm of the government says everything is O.K. and another tells you to watch out? That is what is happening with bisphenol-A — a chemical used in many plastics and epoxy resins now found in baby bottles and liners for canned goods. The answer is a truism in every family rulebook — when in doubt, especially when it comes to children, err on the side of caution. That means it is a good idea to keep the young away from bisphenol-A, or BPA.

The Food and Drug Administration said last month that the small amounts of BPA that leach out of containers and into food or milk are not dangerous. Then this week, the National Toxicology Program, the federal agency for toxicological research, reported that their research shows “some concern” about the effects of BPA on the brain development and behavior of fetuses and young children.

A new study by the Yale School of Medicine is cause for even more concern. In tests on primates, researchers found that BPA “causes the loss of connections between brain cells” that could cause memory or learning problems and depression.

John Bucher, the associate director of the toxicology program, said there is still considerable uncertainty about whether the changes seen in animal studies are causing the same problems in humans. “But we have concluded that the possibility that BPA may affect human development cannot be dismissed.”

Scientists from the toxicology offer this advice:

¶ Watch for the numeral 7 on the bottom of plastic containers. That often means they contain BPA.

¶ Don’t microwave plastic food containers made with BPA. Better to use glass or porcelain.

¶ Watch out for canned foods for children.

¶ Search for baby bottles and other baby products that are BPA-free.

Some states are considering bills to restrict the use of BPA for the young, and Congress is assessing several possible remedies including a BPA ban in children’s products or a ban on BPA in packaging that touches food. The best effort, however, would be the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act. It would require that children’s products are proved safe before they are sold, not — as with BPA — the other way around.

Crepes Suzettes, s'il vous plait!

I was walking by Cobble Hill Park today and noticed a flier for a cool-sounding class - French language immersion through cooking. The class is run by Brooklyn-based company Creative Cooks, and holds classes for children of all ages and levels.

Kids will learn how to make classic French dishes such as souflees, crepes, and coq au vin. The classes are taught entirely in French, so students are bound to pick up more than just food-related terms.

As someone who loves cooking and food, this sounds right up my alley! Has anyone tried something similar?

Classes cost $200/child and are located on Atlantic Avenue. Call 718.227.2218 to register.

Borough Pride for Babies

As I’ve mentioned before, we’ve had City Threads’ Brooklyn and New York Hoodies in stock since the very beginning of Bean. I’d be hard-pressed to think of a more popular item – it’s constantly being bought up for gifts and picked on baby shower registries.

When we saw that they also made t-shirts, we were all over it. They just came in and they are super cute – a great gift for city-dwellers or expats! The Brooklyn Tee comes in denim blue with red embroidery, and the NY Tee is red with blue. Represent!

See matching bottoms and all City Threads styles here.

Bean Baby - Ellie

Here's a new pic of little Ellie, sent in by her auntie Sarah in Brooklyn. At 8 months, she is incredibly full of personality....what a cutie!

Ellie's wearing some gifts that she received from Bean - Kate Quinn's organic kimono onesie with matching pink argyle Babylegs.

Thanks Sarah!

Summer’s Over …Already?

Does anyone else feel like the summer went REALLY fast this year? Perhaps it’s a side effect of getting older, but it really feels as if time has been flying by. I stayed in Brooklyn for Labor Day weekend, and things were pretty quiet until yesterday, when the masses returned from their summer homes and family vacations. Prospect Park was filled with people BBQing, picnicking, playing Frisbee, you name it.

Obviously I’m a little behind, but I just heard about the “Back to School Day” that was held yesterday at Habana Outpost in Fort Greene. Did anyone go? Sounds like a great idea for families – face painting and a dance party for the kids, and frozen drinks for the parents!

Anyway, let’s hope this perfect weather continues a bit longer so we can pretend we’re still in carefree summer mode!

Madelyn's BeanBlog Debut

One of my best friends is welcoming a new addition to the family! Amy and Cameron welcomed Madelyn on August 18, and she is so beautiful. I love this picture of the two of them getting to know each other in her first week home.

Guys, I'm so happy for you and can't wait to meet her! Much love to you all. I have a ton of great shots, so more to come.
