A Look at Surrogacy

Yesterday's New York Times Magazine has an interesting article about surrogacy. The article comes from the "intended parents" perspective, namely Alex Kuczynski, who is one of the Fashion and Style editors at the newspaper.

The article details the process of having a baby through a surrogate and the feelings and issues that are associated with it. I learned a lot from it, despite what I took to be a bit of a condescending tone from Kuczynski. After trying for years to conceive, and then to bring a baby to term, the author and her husband chose to have a baby through a surrogate. In this case, the surrogate gives birth to the biological child of the parents-to-be.

As I suspected, this option is only available to a select echelon of people - - -the costs are prohibitive (up to $80k). But the article is an interesting look into this choice. I would be interested to hear from anyone who knows someone who has used or acted as a surrogate.
